In Chinese Medicine, autumn is the beginning of the renewal cycle in nature: the leaves dry up and fall to the ground as the days get shorter, dryer, and cooler. The energy in nature is contracting, and so is energy in our own bodies.
You may notice dryer skin, hair, and nails, lower overall energy, and yes, lower immunity. That means we become more prone to sickness in the fall, especially the cold and flu.
Fortunately, nature also provides us with the very things we need to stay healthy and prevent the cold and flu. The following three tips will help you stay well into the new year.
Tip 1: Eat Seasonally and Stay Hydrated
Seasonal foods support the body with more essential vitamins and nutrients, which can help prevent the dreaded cold and flu.
One fruit in particular stands out for a healthy system: persimmon. Persimmon is an autumn fruit high in fiber, Vitamin C, and Lycopene, an antioxidant. It helps the body stay hydrated.
Eating plenty of seasonal fruits and veggies will make sure you stay hydrated but also be sure to moisturize the skin with non-toxic Paraben-free oil or lotion daily.
Tip 2: Get Enough Vitamin D
A study in the Journal of Investigative Medicine found that vitamin D plays a crucial role in immune regulation, helping you fend off sickness. But even if you're getting enough sun, you might not be getting optimal vitamin D levels.
This fall, ask your doctor for a 25-hydroxyvitamin D test and a Vitamin D supplement until your levels reach 60 to 100 ng/ml.
When you're taking Vitamin D supplements, however, it's important to also take Vitamins K1 and K2. If you're taking 5000 IU of Vitamin D, you'll want to take at least 500 mcg of K1 and 50 mcg of K2 to prevent kidney (or other) stones from forming in your body.
